Vladislav Grigorev interviewed for a technical implementation role centred on working with data, didn't get it, and came away wanting to go further into that work than any job would have taken him. The city gave him somewhere to go: Toronto and the Province of Ontario publish an enormous amount of open data — transit feeds, park inventories, event calendars, food-safety inspections — but it sits scattered across dozens of portals, apps, and PDFs. near &amp; here. pulls it into one place, onto one map, kept current by a fully automated data pipeline.</p>

The Map tab shows where they are, one dot per permit, with wards shaded by how many units their permits add up to. The Trends tab shows the same permits over time, counting either as applications or units.
Where the data comes from

Everything is pulled straight from Toronto Open Data — the active and cleared building permit datasets, geocoded against the City's municipal address points and joined to ward boundaries. A scheduled job refreshes the whole chain daily. You can download the exact data behind the map as GeoJSON, and the code that builds it is on GitHub.
Caveats worth knowing

A permit is not a finished building — active permits may stall or be abandoned, and cleared permits are the only ones confirmed complete. Permits whose address can't be matched to an address point are counted in the ward totals but can't be drawn as points.

Unit counts are gross, not net. The raw data includes a "dwelling units lost" figure but it's left at zero on virtually every permit, so there is no reliable way to subtract what a demolition removed.</project_article><info_url xsi:nil="true" /><related_datasets>[{"dataset_title": "Active Building Permits", "dataset_slug": "building-permits-active-permits", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Cleared Building Permits", "dataset_slug": "building-permits-cleared-permits", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Address Points", "dataset_slug": "address-points-municipal-toronto-one-address-repository", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "City Wards", "dataset_slug": "city-wards", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Toronto Centreline", "dataset_slug": "toronto-centreline-tcl", "show_dataset": true}]</related_datasets></row>

Search for the cost of any renovation job and you get the same shape of answer every time: a range so wide it tells you nothing, published by a company that makes money introducing you to a contractor. Nobody shows their working, because there usually isn't any.

Meanwhile the City of Toronto has published a detailed record of over 200,000 building permits, including what each applicant declared their project would cost. It has sat there in a data portal, in a format nobody outside city planning was going to open.

That gap is the whole reason for this site. The numbers already existed. They just needed someone to match the work types, strip the typos, and draw the distribution.
<h2>How we make money, stated plainly</h2>
One way, and you should know it before you trust a number here. If you ask for quotes, we pass your details to <em>one</em> vetted contractor and they pay us a flat fee for the introduction. Not three, not five. You will not be buried in calls. The fee is flat and identical across contractors, so no one can pay for a better position.

No display advertising runs on this site. If that changes, this page will say so.</project_article><info_url xsi:nil="true" /><related_datasets xsi:nil="true" /></row>

It lets people report the issues they find when trying to park their bikes in the city.

We believe that cycling — and its benefits for convenience, health, and the climate — should be accessible to everyone.

Unfortunately, a lack of secure, easy-to-access bicycle parking and the fear of bike theft are significant barriers for cyclists. Research has found that a lack of bicycle parking is a particularly significant barrier for women who want to cycle.

E-bikes and cargo bikes are excellent alternatives to driving, but are most in need of secure bicycle parking due to their higher value as well as their space and charging needs.

By helping to improve bicycle parking across the city, we hope that even more people will have the option to use a bicycle to get around.</project_article><info_url xsi:nil="true" /><related_datasets>[{"dataset_title": "Street Furniture - Bicycle Parking - Bicycle Locking Ring", "dataset_slug": "street-furniture-bicycle-parking", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Bicycle Parking - High Capacity (Outdoor)", "dataset_slug": "bicycle-parking-high-capacity-outdoor", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Bicycle Parking Racks", "dataset_slug": "bicycle-parking-racks", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Bicycle Parking - Bike Stations (Indoor)", "dataset_slug": "bicycle-parking-bike-stations-indoor", "show_dataset": true}, {"dataset_title": "Cycling Network", "dataset_slug": "cycling-network", "show_dataset": true}]</related_datasets></row>
