Motor Vehicle Collisions Involving Killed or Seriously Injured Persons

The City of Toronto’s Transportation Services Division receives collision data from the Toronto Police Service (TPS) for motor vehicle collisions that occur in the City of Toronto’s right-of-way and involve a serious injury or fatality.

This dataset includes collision data for all people involved in motor vehicle collisions where at least one person was killed or seriously injured (KSI), since 2006. Each record (row) in the table corresponds to one involved person. The collision data provided include several fields that describe the collision event and actions of people involved. Each data field is either relevant to the collision event and is consistent across all people involved in the collision, or is specific to the person involved. Data fields are described in detail in the data dictionary.

Limitations Data are only provided for fatal or serious injury (KSI) collisions that occur in the City of Toronto’s right-of-way and involve at least one motor vehicle: * Collisions that occurred on private property, or on provincial highways (e.g. 400-series highways), or outside of the City of Toronto boundary, are not included. * Only collisions that involve at least one motor vehicle or streetcar are included. Dooring collisions involving cyclists or other micromobility users are also included starting in 2023. There can be an interval of up to several months to more than a year between the time a collision takes place and when the finalized record is provided to the City by TPS. The City has established practices for reviewing KSI collision data to correct any errors. As a result, records may be modified after being first reported. We endeavour to provide data of the highest quality possible; however, absolute accuracy or completeness cannot be guaranteed.
